Endangered Patagonia - Skiing (and Saving) Chile's Rio Baker Valley
Over the last ten years, often on assignment and in partnership with organizations and outdoor businesses committed to wildlands conservation, we've been exploring the wilderness of Chile's Rio Baker watershed. The heart and soul of Chilean Patagonia and the focus of an inspiring conservation effort aimed at creating a new Patagonia National Park, the Rio Baker watershed is threatened by a short-sighted plan to industrialize one of the planet's last great wild places. In addition to several large dams, the Spanish-Italian energy giant (Endesa-Enel) is hoping to get approval for a 1000+ mile transmission line, which would pass through the heart of Chilean Patagonia - home to five Chilean national parks and two established wilderness reserves. "The damming of the Baker," says a local rancher, "would be a terrible tragedy for Patagonia." Most Chileans know there are better alternatives to big dams, including smaller-scale hydro power, other non-hydro renewable energy sources and investment in regional economies based on tourism and small industry. Let's help the people of Chile protect one of the globe's greatest natural treasures.
